Sistafest

A good writer can describe anything to a reader in such a way that even if that person has never heard of the writer's subject, she can imagine and understand what's being described.

If that's true than I am not a good writer.

Sistafest is an event that can't be described with words. For all the: "it was a rejuvenating, wonderful experience" what lacks is the true spirit of Sistafest and how it changes a woman every time she steps on the land.

What I can describe are the events themselves. There is so much to do at Sistafest: workshops, athletic activities, quick dates, three meals a day, talent shows, room parties and the like. I may have gotten 6 hours of sleep all weekend because Sistafest is a retreat where you can do as much or as little as you like and even though I chose somewhere in the middle, sleep rarely found itself on my schedule.

I facilitated the SistahSingles events which included a worskhop and Quickdates. After Friday night, with both events done, I organized a impromptu group of cheerleaders to further stir the Red Team/Blue Team flag football controversy, engaged in the "Switch" fashion show during which I shed my ultra-femme digs for a pair of khakis, sandals, cornrows and a hat (never again!) and joined an amazing drumming circle facilitated by Afia Walking Tree. I think that last one got my a blister but it was worth it (I *AM* the drum!!).

What makes Sistafest a retreat I plan to return to every year is that it possesses a certain level of magic in that it is one of those rare places free of judgement or animosity so enemies become friends and fears are set aside because you know everyone on the land has your back, how often does that happen? It's a retreat, a vacation spot and a pride celebration all rolled up into 4 days...

And I think those are all the words I have for Sistafest. You, dear reader, are not really any more informed now than you were prior to reading this but I warned you about that in the beginning. I have some words to describe Sistafest but they are both few and insufficient, inadequate and trite, Sistafest is a thing to be experienced with an open mind, without reservation and enough trust in it and yourself to get the most out of it.
